Life here at Ohiwa Ridge is pretty idyllic. You can do as little or as
much as you choose.
Relax in the sun on the beach, keep busy shopping
or enjoy a selection of outdoor and sporting
activities.
For those of you needing a little of city life – there are plenty
of excellent restaurants to enjoy in and around Whakatane, as well as
the character-filled Opotiki Deluxe Theatre where you can take in a movie
in the atmosphere of yesteryear.
At the end of the day put your feet up, sit back and watch one of our
famous sunsets.
Shopping
Whakatane (which is only 30 mins away) has a full range of retail stores.
Most of the national chainstores are represented. The city has a busy
main street (called the Strand) with numerous boutique-style fashion outlets,
gift shops, book stores, bars and cafes.

Outdoor activities
Watersports – there are many
watersport opportunities, including yachting, jet-boats and for those
of you more adventurous- swimming
with dolphins.
Tramping – there are numerous challenging trails and walkways
to explore, and for the less energetic, there’s always a walk along
the beach at sunset.
Fishing – both fresh and salt water fishing. The area is
widely recognised as the tuna capital of NZ with large numbers of Yellowfin,
Skipjack and Albacore tuna congregating to feed on huge shoals of baitfish
from December through to late April. Marlin are also available in summer
months of higher water temperatures. Inshore islands provide an all year
round habitat for snapper, kahawai (sea trout), terakihi. trevally and
seasonal kingfish.
Birding - many thousands of birds gather, at Ohiwa Harbour, including
the Kuaka, the Godwit, as well as many other arctic waders that have been
recorded here.

Sports
Golf - a number of well laid out golf courses – including
those in Opotiki,
Ohope and Whakatane.
Swimming – There is an international standard aquatic centre
at Whakatane – offering both children and adults excellent indoor
and outdoor swimming facilites.
Gyms – there are a number of gym facilites in both Whakatane
and Opotiki.
Tennis, bowls and many other sports are all catered for in and around
the Opotiki and Whakatane.
